So I have come to the conclusion that we need to put up more turf races for our beloved turf fillies.
We have all sorts of Triple Crowns for dirt and turf. We also have the Canadian Triple Crown here. We have one Tiara for the dirt fillies. However, all of these races are for our three year olds. What I want to propose is a race series for The Wire that pits our three year old turf fillies against our older turf fillies. I think our turf fillies ages three and up are pretty level with one another. And we need to make the division stronger. It suffers unfortunately because we are so focused on top dirt races. Even the Turf Triple Crown isn't as backed.
The only races I can name for top turfers are ones for colts, besides the obvious Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
I want the series to be geared for horses running 8,9, & 10 furlongs. This way we welcome horses of all types from milers to classic distances. The series will ultimately lead up to the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Green Horse Fields.
Here are the races: [btw they do have American names]
June Week Four: Monrovia Stakes: 7 furlongs
July Week Two: Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf: 8 furlongs
July Week Four: The Diana: 9 furlongs
August Week Three: The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes: 10 furlongs
September Week One: The Yellow Ribbon Stakes: 10 furlongs
September Week Three: Just A Game Stakes: 9 furlongs
October Week Two: First Lady Stakes: 8 furlongs
November Week One: Flower Bowl: 11 furlongs
December Week One: Beverly D. Handicap: 12 furlongs
December Week Four: Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf at GHF
We need to support our fillies and mares on the turf. These races are geared for a time when our three year old fillies are capable of running with their older counterparts. That means that first half of spring is taken care of already and if some fillies ran in the Triple Tiara (a.k.a Paradise Island) or in the Turf Triple Crown (no one this year), they would be ready for these races. I want to see the times of Little Miss Innocent come back.
So how about it? Top turf fillies return? Most of these do not conflict with turf races at GHF. Some races at GHF are only G3 and up. These races are open to all grade except maiden. The Millions will offer opportunities to sprinters when only classic distance turf races are running at GHF. It should workout and be fun. I hope everyone is as interested as I am.
