Jo finished fixing her hair again, holding her helmet between her knees while she sorted it out... normally she wouldn’t care what her hair looked like but it had started falling out of the tie it had been in during her last ride and the last thing she wanted was for her hair to be falling in her face while she was riding next. Once she was satisfied that it was secure enough and wasn’t going to fall out again, she replaced her helmet, walking over to where Jason was holding Lily, letting the tall teenager give her an easy leg up into the filly’s saddle. Sometimes she wondered exactly what his, Ash and Casey’s mother had fed them whilst they were growing up, the three males were ridiculously tall, even compared to the horses... it didn’t exactly help that she was tiny to begin with but they were just larger than the average male anyway.
Angie was already on board Minty a couple of metres away, nudging the mare forward towards the gate to the inner dirt track when she saw that her older sister had sorted herself and Lily out, keeping the older mare at a walk until Jo had caught up to her – ironically, both of the sisters were riding a pair of sisters – before nudging her into a trot when the other pair had caught up to them, angling her in towards the inside rail.
“So, are you going to tell me who that boy is who was over at our place the other night?” Jo asked her, flashing a cheeky grin over at her younger sister, tightening her grip a little on Lily’s reins as the younger filly tried to speed up a little, the slight increase in pressure on the bit making the filly quickly slow down again to a pace Jo wanted her to go at.
“Hey, that’s not fair, I don’t ask you any questions about Jordan,” Angie answered, holding Minty back so the mare was perfectly in line with the other pair so that they could talk as they went.
“Okay, fair enough,” Jo responded, laughing lightly, knowing that her sister was probably rolling her eyes at her over on the other horse, but she didn’t look at her long enough to see if she was or not.
“His name is Ryan... and we’ve been seeing each other officially for about a week now... and that’s all you’re getting out of me for now.”
“Well, that’s more than I thought I was going to get so I’m not complaining,” she answered, letting Lily switch into a slow canter, Angie doing the same with Minty beside her, although the other bay Thoroughbred leapt into it with a sort of giant hop forward, obviously thinking that she was going to get to go faster but was majorly disappointed when she was pulled back into a slower pace than what she had wanted to go at.
They continued on at that pace for a few more furlongs before letting the horses move into a moderately paced gallop now that they had finished their warm up, stopping the light conversation they had been having previously now that they were at a faster pace, concentrating on keeping the girls at the right speed, since they were only being breezed today and the last thing they needed was for one or both of them to take off on them and use up way more energy than Ash had wanted them to burn this session. Thankfully, neither of them seemed to be really feeling their oats this morning anyway, besides a few occasional tugs on the bit in an attempt to get ahead of the other they really gave their riders little to no trouble at all.
Once they had done with their breeze, Jo and Angie pulled them back up, slowing them back down to the slow canter they had been in previously for another few furlongs, then back down to the trot again, before switching completely down to a walk for their cool down, both horses still feeling like they could go on for a bit longer underneath them, but that was a good thing, it meant the conditioning that they were going through was working and their stamina was building. Now all that was left to see was if it would do them any good when it actually came down to race day.
