Miss Josephine Retired with Career Ending Injury
Battle Brook Stable's top distaff turf mare of Year Sixteen saw her season and career put to bed after her most recent race. Miss Josephine, a daughter of Indigo Morning stallion Passionate Class, finished third in The Diana here at The Wire July Week Four. Although her performance was valiant, her connections were hoping for a stronger finish in the nine furlong race. The mare had been training furiously since her June victory in the Seashell Cup Grade One, her career defining win. Unfortunately, an off day was not the answer.
Upon returning from the test barn, Ripley Marsh noticed that the filly was just a touch sore on the front right. Feeling heat in the leg, she called their vet for an x-ray. The film wasn't promising and further images showed a non-displaced fracture in the knee. Not a life threatening injury, but one that put a damper on a fabulous five year old season.
"It's unfortunate that this had to happen right before the major filly and mare turf races at The Wire, but it's good that nothing worse came out of her effort in the Diana. It was a tough race and she ran tremendously well even on the bum knee. You can't be prepared for these kinds of things even though it does happen."
Miss Josephine will be okay without surgery, but her connections are certain she is done as a racehorse. "It wouldn't be fruitful to put her back in training at six if she were cleared to run by the vet. We have Coveted Faith coming up behind her in the ranks, a filly who is more versatile than MJ and who won the final leg of the Turf Triple Tiara. We won't be missing the turf series with Faith on our team and MJ can go into the let down process and vacation well before we breed her in Year Eighteen to Spotlight Pride. Her pedigree offers an exciting combination of out-cross opportunities and access to Night Stalker's only turf line. To say we are thrilled for her to be joining our broodmare band is an understatement. Our crew is ecstatic."
Miss Josephine ran a marvelous career, finishing out of the money only four times in her 45 race career. After The Diana, Miss Josephine's record at retirement stands at 45-15-19-8. Her biggest victories came this season in the Bella Donna Stakes* and the Seashell Cup Grade One*. It is obvious that the bay mare is more than deserving of a happy retirement in the hills of northern Kentucky country.
