Sweetness Unlimited and Jessie Coppermen
Dry Your Tears and Hadley Grayson
Rough Diamond and Aaron Evertt
Attractive Flight and Alex Shade
It was a rather busy morning at Grayson Meadows, far more than it normally would be, of course it was for a good reason. Today would be the first day that they would be working out more than a four horse group. No, they would be working out five horses in just one workout today, yes, this was going to be very hectic. Grayson Meadows was about to work every sprinter they owned in a single workout.
Speedy nearly jerked Andrew’s arms out of their sockets while he tugged on on the reins. Andrew as usual had arrived rather early that morning and he was nearly ready to go by the time everyone else got there.
Alex shuffled around Matty and the stallion danced and pranced in his stall as Alex finished up tightening his cinch. Matty’s ears perked with interest and he cocked his head sideways at Alex all the while shuffling his feet. His muscles ached for the track. Although Matty wasn’t his regular mount Alex seemed to click fairly well with the half brother of Forbidden To Fly, but then again, Alex clicked with about any horse you put him on.
Jessie scratched Ness between her ears and the mare lowered her head with her eyes closed and lip twitching with pleasure. The bay mare had really settled in and hit it off well with him right from the start. Ness would sometimes call to him down the hall and Jessie would call back to her.
Then there was Aaron, who was throwing the saddle onto Dia’s back and the filly instantly jumped a few inches into the air with excitement. Her hide twitched uncontrollably and she looked like she was about ready to run right out of her skin. She squealed and held her head high, the two year old wouldn’t be making her first start for awhile, but Aaron had decided to see how she would handle a race-like situation. She’d tried to convince Tanner to ride Divie, Crook, Tayo or even Lucy but he simply refused and said five horses was enough, the others would get their run in eventually.
Tia was flicking her ears to and fro with all the activity in the barn she’d become rather excited. Hadley finished wrapping her hind legs and scratched her on her belly, and Tia stretched her neck out and flashed her open lip at anyone walking by her stall. She’d really connected with the filly in the short time that they’d had her.
They quickly finished up tacking their mounts and mounted then the crew headed out to the track. Matty danced and hopped around, the colt had been in a much better mood as of late although it didn’t stop him from hating on his stablemates who’d beaten him previously. Dia slammed her teeth down on her bit and tugged hard at the reins. She arched her neck beautifully and flexed her muscles. She appeared to be showing off, and she was doing a very good job of that. Dia was a looker, and she caught many eyes on the track as a result of that. Speedy always made sure he was at the front of the pack, he pinned his ears at Dia as she trotted alongside of him, not close enough to be bitten but close enough to catch his immediate attention. Aaron pulled the filly back and took her in a circle to give Speedy some room. Ness and Tia were bringing up the rear although I wouldn’t exactly call Tia calm, the filly liked to take her time with about everything. Hence why she was a closer. She’d been catching eyes on the track, she’d already racked up two wins under Grayson Meadows’ training program, of course it came as little surprise to team Grayson Meadows.Tia was loaded with talent as most Cryin’ Out Loud foals were and although she took a little more time to develop, Tia looked to be one of the horses to pull off the biggest upsets in the sprints for the year.
Ness lulled a little behind Tia, who played with her bit in her mouth. Ness was the most laid back in the group and probably the most laid back horse at Grayson Meadows at the time. However it wasn’t like she lacked energy, nope, Ness was getting into her zone.
They warmed up their mounts and headed for the gate. Speedy was the first to go in, the stallion was the half brother of Mastermind and the expectations of him were high for this season. He’d been lightly raced his last season and hadn’t raced since August of last year, but he couldn’t look more ready, he and Ness had been going through training to get them back into racing shape since they arrived.
Ness gated after Speedy, and then came Dia in gate three. The filly was on her toes and was lifting her front feet with excitement. She loved the track and that certainly showed. Tia gated shortly after without an issue and Matty followed her into the fifth gate. They all stood in line for the start and Speedy nearly reared up in the gate with anticipation, Andrew quickly suppressed the stallion.
The gates flew open and it was like a dam bursting. Speedy shot from the gate with incredible Speed, his start couldn’t be more flawless. Ness wasn’t going to let him get off easy though, she was at his shoulder and running along strongly. Then there was the gap of about a length back to Dia and Tia who were running alongside each other with little problem. Matty brought up the rear with Alex and the two were just biding their time.
Everyone else was running near effortlessly, the action was happening at the front of the group. Ness continued to press Speedy who was under a hard hold by Andrew, Dia had edged up a bit and was sitting half a length behind them with Tia at her shoulder and Matty had dropped about a length behind. Dirt pelted his face and his ears were perked and attentive, he was loving every second of this.
They were into the final turn and Speedy and Ness began to make their moves, they were at each other throats and digging in already and the final turn was about over. Dia and Tia were moving quickly together on the outside and soon all four of them were spanned across the track. Speedy was beginning to feel the stress and dropping back a bit but he was still fighting on gallantly, he wasn’t giving up without a fight. Ness continued to press on as Tia got her nose in front and Dia wasn’t far behind. Then there was Matty, Alex tapped the stallion on his shoulder and he charged into the fray, he flew down the stretch with such a purpose. He flew past he group and Alex continued to ride him strongly. Tia took chase and found another gear, she flew down the stretch after Matty who had a two length lead on the group. Dia followed suit with Ness on her tail and Speedy fought on. They hit the wire and Matty crossed it in first followed by Tia and Dia, Ness and Speedy were inseparable as they continued to fight each other down the stretch, in a excellent display of heart.
