BEYOND THE LIES && MAVERICK HARRIS
BEYOND PERFECTION && CLINTON WARD
Clinton had decided Felicity was crazy for putting these two together for a workout. Bear was a handful enough of the time and Leah was just a plain old witch. Not to mention they were both relatively new to the barn and had not been raced since December of the following year. The jockey eyed the bay stallion with calculating eyes, trying to gather what he was going to do on the track with the grey filly who was notorious for tossing jockeys flat on their backs. The boss had told them to run the horses for a mile, a grueling workout for both riders as their mounts would surely give them a run for their money. Neither one of them were front runners so they would have to let them settle in their positions coming out of the gate. From there, the team hoped they could keep the two out of trouble long enough to finish the workout in decent timing.
Bear was walking next to Clinton with long, loping strides. His bay coat glimmered in the sun, his white "hurricane" star shining brighter than usual. The horses had taken well to the conditioning over the break, and many of them had filled out with new rippling muscles over the past month. The stallion seemed to be content at the moment, his nipping habit momentarily forgotten. Clinton grimaced at the memory of those teeth striking out with uncanny precision, almost taking a chunk out of his forearm. Man, he almost felt bad for the grooms that had the job of hosing him down after a work. Almost.
He himself was still rather new to OVS and had settled in a little before the races had started up again. That being said, Clinton was still being eyed with reserved caution by most of the other stable hands. He admits that he can be a jerk sometimes, but that does not mean he isn't a good guy. In fact, he had been trying to warm up to everyone since getting here. Who knows, it may just turn out like before and no one says anything unless it is absolutely necessary.
Swearing erupted behind him as a dark grey horse trotted past, jockey and groom barely able to control her. Some part of Clinton warned him about laughing, but he couldn't help it. Blake hauled the filly around to face the track as Maverick tried in vain to hop onto her back. Beyond the Lies, "Leah", was going to be a handful today. Clinton whistled when she threw a buck as soon as Mav had scrambled on. Man, you better have some glue stuck to your butt Maverick, or she's gonna lay you out for a week!
Maverick shot Clinton a glare before rounding the filly onto the track, immediately pushing her into a trot. Leah was already chomping at the bit to run and her jockey was not going to hold her back much longer. So far, the "young gun" had been the only one able to control the filly long enough to get her in the gates. Bella usually was the one for the problem horses, however, Leah had this uncanny hatred of anything else female. They hadn't even attempted Kallie as a jockey, who knows what that horse would do with the novice rider in a matter of seconds. The oldest jockey could ride the mare, but he just enjoyed watching Maverick getting tossed around. It was good for him, Clinton thought, the boy needed something to focus on so he wouldn't open his mouth.
Bear took off quickly after his breezing partner, rather eager to get this show on the road. Usually the stallion turned to his stud side whenever a female was around, but even he seemed to sense egging the grey filly on was asking for a swift kick to the head. Clinton warmed him up like usual, letting him stretch his legs a little bit before walking (if at all possible) calmly to the starting gate. The bay stallion was gearing up to go as they approached the gate, swinging his hind end around and tossing his head when his jockey held him at a walk. Maverick was having worse luck with his mount. Leah had moved into an awkward dance as they waited for the grooms to load them into the gate. She instantly settled when loaded, and Bear followed quickly behind. No one wanted to hold these two in the gates for much longer. The sooner the better.
With a loud CLANG, the gates burst open. Naturally, Leah broke first and was several lengths ahead by the time Bear had unfolded his legs into a gallop. They both settled into the strides, with the grey filly leading and Bear a stride behind. There was no doubt that Leah would be leading this race. With her attitude as of lately, she did not want anyone in her way. Before long they were passing the half mile marker, both horses still in their positions. The bay stallion was rather comfortable and Clinton didn't doubt as soon as they came around the homestretch, he would start to make his move for the front.
Maverick was holding the filly back as they ran the last few strides of the backstretch before coming around the turn. He had yet to see Clinton and Beyond Perfection coming up on her flanks, so it was either a good or a bad sign. By no means did he want to wear Leah out just yet. Bear was a strong closer and would challenge them down to the wire. As for his mount, Leah was floating down the track, her ears pricked and a hefty spring in her stride. This filly loved to run.
They headed around the last turn before Clinton let the stallion go. Bear responded instantly, throwing himself to the outside in an effort to swing past his opponent. Clinton swore and dragged him back in towards the rail. Like usual, the bay had over-done his move and had drifted to the outside too far. They had lost a little ground on the leader so the jockey guided the stallion a little better the second time he qued him to gain on Leah. This time Bear sprung up next to the filly, gunning for the front spot. Leah knew he was coming, though, and pushed harder to hold onto her position. They were one furlong away from the wire and both horses were not willing to give in.
Bear gave it one last hurrah and bumped Leah's shoulder as he squeezed a head in front. The filly did not like that by all means, so Maverick was astonished when she reached over and bit the stallion on the neck, showing she was not going to let him bump her around. The bay pinned his ears and lost his concentration for a second, just long enough for Leah to gain a step on him, winning it by a whisker.
