SOUTHERN PEACH && KALLIE SULLIVAN
RELIANCE && ISABELLE NOTTINGHAM
TINY DANCER && MAVERICK HARRIS
Kallie was beaming with excitement as she tacked up the two year old filly that had arrived rather recently to OVS. The juvenile was a stunning copper color, with four socks and big blaze running down the center of her head. Her name fit her rather well. Southern Peach. Peaches. Peachy. There had been several nicknames manifested since her arrival and most of the barn was drooling over her good looks. Peaches seemed to be taking in all the attention she could. Much of her personality had shown up over the past couple weeks and it was very clear she would be a fearless runner, but a total sweetheart all the same. Much of the time in the pasture she would graze until someone started a game of chase, and then she would take off after the other horses, on a mission to win. The chestnut was already well known for her 'strut' as she would show off at any chance she was given.
Peaches was showing off already, and it was still early in the morning. Where other racers were drowsy and grumpy getting tacked up, the filly was alert and watching the buzz around the barn carefully. Always the polite mare she was, Peaches stood quietly at the cross tie while Kallie flitted around her, giving her glossy coat a quick run down before flicking the light blue pad across her back. Ears flickered as she caught noises in the aisle behind her, the other two horses getting tacked up. She rumbled a low nicker and got a few responses from the others still in their stalls. Kallie grinned and patted the mare on the nose, today was going to be fun.
Before long Peaches and her breezing partners, Reliance and Tiny Dancer, made their way out to the dirt track. They were to breeze the horses a short distance of four furlongs before pushing them hard for two more furlongs. It was at the bottom end of Peaches's distance, and shorter than the other two racer's lengths. But until they gained another sprinter on the dirt, the chestnut was stuck with the two bays as partners.
Reliance was being a jerk, like usual. He hauled little Bella around as she led him onto the track and towards the mounting block. The bay stallion was notorious for being uncontrollable and only seemed to be getting worse as he aged. Sawyer followed closely behind, ready to grab the colt as soon as he became too much to handle. But Bella was good about holding her own. She pushed back and soon Reliance was walking along obediently, sulking in his own little world. Behind Ry, another lighter bay followed. Dancer strutted onto the track with her head held high, barely paying attention to her handler. Maverick was frowning at the sun. He never really was a morning person and was especially grumpy today. He climbed aboard the mare before moving off at a trot.
Warm up did not take up too much time with three very active horses. They spent a few minutes at a canter before heading for the backstretch. With unspoken agreement, they let the thoroughbreds go at the half mile marker. They sprung into a gallop and immediately settled into their happy places. Without a front runner, Reliance slid into the front, with a little space between him and the mares. Tiny Dancer and Southern Peach were neck and neck starting out until they finally settled with the chestnut mare a length ahead of Dancer.
Kallie was happy with Peaches's spot, even if it was out of her normal place in the pack. The chestnut was moving swiftly, not giving Reliance much of a lead. Even running against the older horses, she was going to hold her own on the race track. Kallie could feel the filly building underneath her, waiting for her chance at the lead. They just passed the four furlong marker when the horses suddenly began making their moves. Reliance pulled ahead, opening up his gallop and taking off with Mav. Behind Kallie and Peaches, Tiny Dancer was gaining speed and would pass them up any second now. They were all gunning for the lead and it would come down to the last few strides to see who would gain it.
Peaches was a freight train coming down the last furlong, gaining speed with every stride. Kallie let her have her head and suddenly they were moving up next to Ry and Maverick. Her jockey had her eyes locked on the last furlong pole, determined to show the other two what this little filly could do. Peaches was neck and neck with Reliance as they came down to the last stride, Tiny Dancer just off of her flank. They flew past the pole, legs unfurled. It took Kallie another couple furlongs to get the chestnut under control and back to a walk. She met up with the other two jockeys and their mounts before they rode them back to the hot walker.
