Take Them Down
Take Flight and Alex Shade
Fly rose his head as Alex slid off of another horse and walked over to him. Today was a busy morning with a lot of horses that needed to be worked, and Fly could feel the importance of this work, which made him want to work that much harder for Alex. He wouldn’t be working with his regular workmate and the ‘comedy team’ wouldn’t entertain anyone this morning. Fly whinnied in a low growling-like tone and Alex laughed. “Sorry, we thought it’d best that you work by yourself, it’s a pretty important race you know.” Alex patted his neck and checked his cinch before using a mounting block to get up on his back. Steve had been running around all morning with Tanner trying to get all of the workouts organized and clocked, Alex wondered if anyone had tried contacting someone else as the stable needed another trainer pretty badly.
Alex trotted Fly out onto The Wire’s turf practice track, and Fly threw his head up and ducked it back down and started prancing around much like a certain grey mare Alex was very fond of. Fly then turned his head back and nipped at Alex’s leg which he only got his boot.
Alex started to get Fly warmed up, which wouldn’t seem to be a hard task but Fly always tried to do everything very quickly and Alex had to keep the colt from wasting all his energy on his warm up. The gate wouldn’t be a problem for him so they’d decided to let him loose and just let him run as much as they wanted him to. A quick five furlongs and a eight furlong run out aut to help with speed and stamina. So with that being said, Alex clicked and squeezed gently on the colts sides and Fly took off underneath him as a true race horse would. Fly flew over the turf and Alex kept him at a nice nearly jogging pace as it wasn’t time to get moving quite yet. They continued until Alex saw the pole and he pushed Take Flight into a full gallop and the colt responded with a surge of speed. He glided over the turf with little effort, and anyone who saw him would say that he was looking quite a bit like a three year old, he was losing that langy scrawny look about him and was starting to look like a muscular swan. Elegant but fierce, Fly was going to be one good looking three year old. Coming into his final few furlongs of his work Alex cut the colt fully loose and he sprinted with such speed of a sprinter and he didn’t sound to be winded at all. They hit the wire together and Alex patted the colt with a smile. “Take them down Fly, we all know you can.” With that they continued their gallop out.
