Round 2
Honorary and Alex Shade
Silver Secret and Jessie Coppermen
Honor yanked hard on her bit, white foam already forming around her mouth and the workout hadn’t even started yet. Alex restrained the gray filly who was coiled up so tight that if he let her go she would probably sprint three laps around the track before she finally slowed down to be somewhat controllable. She continued chomping on her simple snaffle bit and prancing around, bucking and rearing.Jessie smirked at watching Alex struggle with the high strung two year old. Sissy sat quietly watching Honor make a bit of a scene on the track. It reminded him a bit of the spill he took off of Divie in their last workout. The bay hadn’t meant to hurt him, she simply was too excited and got spooked by a few birds on the track. He was surprised Alex was still on the fiery filly, she’d been acting up all day. “Maybe you should just let her run it off.” Jessie suggested.
“Yeah right...” Alex growled, “forget about starting from the gate, you go ahead and start out the work with Sissy, she’ll catch up soon.”
Jessie didn’t need to be told twice, and he tapped Sissy’s sides and the dappled gray mare took off with him. They settled down into a nice rhythm and he waited for Alex and Honor to join them.
Alex finally released his strong hold on Honor, and the filly took off in a mad dash for her older stablemate. Her speed never failed to amaze him, she had such a smooth and natural acceleration, she was quicker then most two year olds, she just needed to cool her head and focus on the matter at hand. Soon Honor had shot right up to Sissy, she could have flew right past her, but she slowed down to duel with the older mare. Honor was pretty smart, but she liked to play games.
Sissy was up to Honor’s challenge and the two began to grind and push each other over The Wire’s dirt track.
Sissy had recently Graded up to G1, the highest status a race horse could achieve. Team Grayson Meadows had contemplated retiring the mare, but decided to see what she could do by the end of the year. She wouldn’t race again till next week, but Honor needed the experience and Sissy always gave the bright two year old a good challenge.
Honor’s next race was the Betram F. Bongard Stakes, looking at the field most would say she had no chance. Which they would be right, she may come in second, but there was no way she would beat both Nirvana and Barely A Sound in the form she was in right now. The race would benefit her in the long run though. So they would have to do their best to get Honor into top shape for the race.
Coming into the homestretch Alex let his frustrated, coiled up, fire cracker of a race horse out of her cage and she surged ahead of her elder stablemate. Sissy fired back though and they were battling hard down the stretch, Honor dug deeper and lengthened her stride as far as she could. Sissy continued to push her younger stablemate and was cutting into her head lead on her, they were head in head, stride in stride, nose in nose. There was no way of telling who was who (other than Sissy was .1 hands shorter than Honor) when they hit the wire together with no clear winner.
