RADIATION THERAPY Jockeyed by Carlos Sanchez
Ben's & Radiation's Novisio Derby workout
[/size]It had appeared Chris Stevens would be running alongside his friend Carlos Sanchez again as was GS Super Charged and Radiation Therapy. The two bays were a year apart in age but, would be running in the same race this time. The Novisio Derby came once every year like most races but, it was the start of a tournament race. This time the two colts would be racing against each other along with variety of other horses on the field.
This would be the second workout Ben and Radiation would have been side by side together but, it was rather difficult for the two males as Ben did not get along with others much. It took Chris a few moments to get the colt to settle down as Carlos brought Radiation to the tracks to walk off the ruckus. GS Super Charged was a colt full of promise and was built for speed and stamina. His sire was Admiral's Revenge, a MHS Triple Crown Winner as well as plenty of wins to his name but, due to his aggression the stallion had to retire to stud. GS Super Charged picked up his sire's attitude but, with a mellow side due to his dam Sonata.
Radiation Therapy was sired by Radiance, the stallion who won the Y7 Breeder's Cup Juvenile, Y8 Dubai Colt Cup, Y8 Belmont Stakes, Y8 Breeder's Cup Marathon, Y8 Palm Tree Paradise Invitational, Y9 Dubai Colt Cup, Y9 Breeders Cup Classic. His dam was Santana's Moment who didn't do so well on the track her lines come from Barely a Moment. He also came from lines of HoF True Enough. Both colts had terrific lines as did the other horses on the field.
Chris rode Ben to the track with his pride intact and Chris had waved Carlos to start ahead so Ben could have a late start to cool off his nerves. "Go on ahead my friend It'll give Ben a challenge to catch up." Chris said as Ben started trotting sideways the colt shaking his head with a loud whinny. "Come on Ben your alright you've ran with him before." Chris said hoping that GS Super Charged would at least get the picture of what to do. While Carlos was already a few lengths ahead Radiation ran smoothly with his strides evenly.
Radiation Therapy was a sweet colt and showed no problems with anyone around him. He was also a distance runner and loved to run even in the grazing paddocks. He was moved into the same stables as his siblings. Nakita Rose, the owner thought it would be best for the siblings to remain close but, still as competitors on the track. As he reached the the first of the back stretch, GS Super Charged began to pick up speed. He would not allow him to show weakness and so with a fine stride and confidence built in Ben took off away from the start and looked to the colt ahead of him.
GS Super Charged stayed clear of the railing and moved his feet with a faster speed then before but, this was not his final speed he had much more to give. As a closer Ben seemed to stay behind the pack but, he snuck up on challengers like a lioness hunting for her prey. Ben found his stride and moved along with it as he saw Radiation just up ahead with speed of his own. The Novisio Derby was one of Ben's known races as he came in 3rd last year for it. Chris was hoping he would better this year or match the point.
It wasn't long until both colts were running alongside each other in a death match. Ben came from the outside pushing Radiation closer to the railing. Ben stood 2 inches taller then Radiation, he held his head above the dark bay colt to locate the wire ahead and as he snorted and bit down on the bit in his mouth GS Super Charged looked at his challenger and the colt had already knew what to do. He was close to winning a leg of both the Triple Crown and the Canadian Triple crown but, came in second.
Radiation was only a 2 year old he still had miles to run and races to prove his name. The two colts drove for the wire both seeking it with determination. The two jockey's on their backs were in awe as they were on champions. It was like watching Seabiscuit against War Admiral on the television the two were uncle and nephew and the nephew proved himself worthy of his lines. Here it was nothing of the same but, how the horses ran seemed to be like it.
The bay colts took their lead as Ben began to drive away with every last inch of energy he had left. He wanted the win so badly he didn't care who he ran against. Where his aggression was his bad side he still loved to race. The horses passed the wire with Ben taking the win of the workout. The colt was in his moods but, passed it with no issue's. Radiation was only a foot behind him with a slow stop. Ben reared up with the excitement and pranced aside. "That was a good run Carlos. Radiation seemed intense out there." Chris said as he had Ben come to a stop to relax his nerves.
"Yeah well he still has a lot of work. the end of the year is almost up I want the best for Radiation." Carlos spoke in return to Chris. Both jockey's would not only see each other back at home but, they would reunite again come race day. With the race this week Chris felt Ben needed this win he would pray for it. The colt had a nice few weeks off from the Crown he wanted Ben to feel the win on his shoulders like he did with the win of the Cococabana Derby.
